Ill Manors Music Video

ill Manors is a hip pop protest song. some say that it is the best protest song in years. the song produced by the record label of 679 records and Atlantic. The song was released on the 25th of march 2012. ill manors debuted at number six on the UK singles chart with first  week sales of 37,455 copies.
The Guardian explained why the song is the greatest British protest song in years. They said "When Plan B debuted the video to his new single Ill Manors over the weekend, shadow health minister Jamie Reed MP tweeted: "The risk of any lefty politician being pilloried for praising the new Plan B track is really pretty high. That said, it's excellent." He was correct on both counts. For lovers of overtly political music Ill Manors is almost too good to be true: a thrilling release from a multi-platinum star that deals unflinchingly with last summer's riots and still lands on the Radio 1 playlist – the first great mainstream protest song in years. What's the catch?"

Plan B TEDx Lecture

1. What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies?

Plan B's beliefs include that there should justice and fairness and should equality between everyone that walks on this earth. He also believes that young people should not be overlooked just by looking from where they are brought up or where they are live or who they hang around with. Plan B's ideology is that he thinks that anyone should  be treated the same disregarding which ethnicity or background they are from.

2.Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?

The target audience of his lecture is adults between the age of 25-45 because they are the people who mainly overlooked young people, especially after the London riots. The lecture is mainly targeted at a c1, b, a demographic. This is due to people in this category over looking young people and they judge them. Also that demography is manipulated by the media. But because of Plan B's background there is a 4c audience that really look up to him and then they get a bit of freedom from restriction and social awareness.

3.What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panics?

Plan b’s views on the media are that of bias and unfair. This can be linked back to Cohen’s media theory of moral panic due to the fact that media through this negative representation has created an instance of public anxiety are alarm in response to a problem regarded as threatening the moral standards of society.

ill Manors - The making

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?
Plan B tells us that he wants to change peoples mind when they look at young people and the people that were involved in the riots.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?
We learnt that it took a long time to actually get to a point when they actually made the film. We found out that he first made a music video which leaded up to a short movie which was shown on channel 4, we also found out that he they had a very low-budget to make this film. he used non-professional actors which in most cases was the best option because these people have lived through these situations.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?
From watching the movie I think the target audience was middle class people because they looked down at young people but the movie had a big hit with young people in my opinion just because young people was at the heart of the movie.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the making of documentary.
I think the film did achieve what Ben Drew set out to do because it showed that people in this movie needed "love, compassion" because then they would have settled down because they needed someone to care but no one did and then they need to stand and survive on their own and I think that was what Ben Drew showed in the film.

MEST2: Research and Planning

  • Institution research
BBC3 and E4 they are like twins that got separated but are now with different families.

BBC3:
BBC3 isa TV channel that is presented by the BBC3 broadcasting. There target audience are those in the 16-34 year old age group. In 2001 the bbc choosed to rebrand their two digital channels, so that could link more into BBC One and BBC Two. They finally in 2002 BBC Choice was renamed and rebranded to BBC Three. Some people disagreed about the changed and said that the channel would become rivals between ITV2 and E4.

BBC3 focus on drama, entertainment, comedy, music, learning and news. The some of the most popular programs are, Sherlock, Russel Howards's good news and Bad Education. BBC3 is a channel that  have a audience that dont like to watch the news for too long, thats why BBC3 have 60 seconds news every hour between programs which tells the news in 60 seconds.

E4
E4 is a british channel which was launched s a pay-TV companion to channel 4 in 2001. The "E" stands for entertainment. The channel has a very similar target audience. The channel is mainly aimed at 15-35 age group. On the channel they show alot of american programs, they also have alot of british shows. Its most successful broadcast to date was on 11 October 2010 when an episode of The Inbetweeners pulled in over 3.7 million viewers.
E4 is watched by 9.6 million people a month and its audience share of 1.8% places it well ahead of Sky1 and the better-funded BBC3 – although the BSkyB general entertainment channel is available in fewer homes, and the corporation's service only broadcasts 12 hours a day – and has grown every year without fail.

Audience Research and planning

Audience Research and planning
My target audience for my TV show are 15-30 year olds. To be honest my target audience doesn’t really have a target gender. I think it’s a program which connects 2 both males and females. I think my shows target audience is people who on BBC3 and my main protagonist turns into an undercover police. So then the overall the message the show is trying to send is that the police try their best then again the BBC’s have 3 things they want to achieve is to inform-educate-entertain, and that’s why the show is trying inform the audience that the police force is a strong force and that the audience should believe in the police force.

I think when it comes to demographics my program appelas to all the groups but i think it mostly apeals to E, D, C1 and C2 but i think the program apeals to the E group more because its about gangs a d police and the main protagonist a d the E group it apeals to students and persinors becuase persinors well see themsleves as one of the characters in the program and students can relate to the main protagonist because of there age and because that at 15-17 age young people tend to have some probelms with familes.

Using Youngs and Rubicam's Psychographics, my concept will target the groups Strugglers, The Mainstreams, The Aspirers and the Explorer, because my program is about someone trying to escape from his life and wants to do something rather than paying of debts which will connect the strugglers. Also the narrative is something new which i havent seen on tv which would go into The Explores. Furthermore I think the concept is unique in a way that the program is presented as a mainstream program and that would fit in with the Mainstream. My main protagonist fits as a aspirer because he is pushed by other perceptions and i think that would connect to the audience that fit into the The Aspirer group.
